Who we are

With nearly 1000 members, the University of Nottingham Law Society offers an unparalleled experience for law and non-law students. Because of our prestige and history, LawSoc is able to work closely with the most reputable law firms in the world, providing our members with excellent career and networking opportunities from day one.

Thanks to its kind sponsors, LawSoc is also able to provide the biggest and most frequent socials across campus at the cheapest prices. LawSoc also has the best sports teams on campus. Our basketball, rugby, hockey, netball, volleyball, and football teams, are a force to be reckoned with every weekend. Most importantly, LawSoc is a channel of support for its members and the wider community. As well as participating in a charitable events, from teaching children to running marathons, the LawSoc Adoption Scheme is one of the most longstanding and successful internal mentoring schemes at the University, laying testament to the belief that LawSoc is, in essence, one big family.

President’s Address

President’s Adress:

Welcome to the university of Nottingham’s Law Society website. I am Autumn Flanagan, your Law Society President. On behalf of the society, I am thrilled to extend the warmest of welcomes.

We are the most active student society on campus, with over 1,100 members from both law and non-law degree backgrounds. As one of the largest law societies in the country, we have solidified relationships with some of the biggest law firms in the world.

The society is run by a committee of 15, ranging from myself, to our Social Secrataries, Sports Secretary, Non-Law representative, Careers Officer, International Representative, and Diversity & Welfare Officer, to name just a few. As a committee, we each work hard to ensure there will be someone to offer advice, support and guidance, no matter your background or interest in joining the society. We ultimately strive to give you the best possible opportunities and experiences for the duration of your membership.

To our members, both new and returning, the Law Society provides a unique blend of opportunities to engage in the multitude of careers events we host, well also ensuring our members have the chance to relax and enjoy their time here with the biggest and most distinguished socials on campus from river boat parties to our grand Winter and Summer Balls.

The society is proud to boast numerous sports teams that are some of the best and most competitive on campus, including rugby, hockey, netball, basketball, and mens and women’s football teams, with the former managing to win the IMS cup the previous year. Our teams will not just be competing in the IMS league this year, but also against other universities’ law societies at our prestigious varsity event.

We hold our duty of care to those around us and our planet in high regard. Our Charity Officer has helped us form a charity partnership for the upcoming academic year. Importantly, our Diversity & Welfare Officer ensures all events are accessible to all and that our members wellbeing is of the highest importance.

Please make sure you follow our social media platforms to keep updated on our many events and opportunities.

Over the past few years, the Law Society has been awarded the Best Academic Experiance (2018, Highly Commended 2017), Best Departmental Society (2015, 2017), Activities Officer Award (2018), and Best Society (2012, 2015, Highly Commended 2017) by the University of Nottingham Societies Award. As well as this, the Law Society has been recognised nationally, being nominated for the National Union of Students’ Best UK Society award and winning Best Law Society 2019 and Most Committed to Increasing Diversity 2020 and 2021 at the Lawcareers.Net University Awards for our Dinner with the City Event, our socials and our Diversity Series. Most recently, we won ‘Top Grads Sociey’ 2023 and ‘Best at Student Engagment’ 2024.

I would finally like to offer my most scensierest thank you to all of our sponsors for the generous support given to our society. I eagerly anticipate working with every one of you in the coming year.

Becoming a member of LawSoc (as we are fondly known to members), is one of the most rewarding things you can do as a student at the Univeristy of Nottingham. Do not hesitate to come and say hi if you see myself of any of our committee around campus ! I look forward to seeing you at our events over the coming year.

Best wishes,

Autumn Flanagan
